“Here we are, trapped in the amber of the moment. There is no why.”

Vonnegut

I was saddened this morning when Alex sent me a message telling me that the legendary American author and humanist Kurt Vonnegut passed away yesterday. He was 84. Vonnegut’s novels, combining satire, autobiography and science fiction, generally dealt with the basic questions of human existence in a sometimes dark and always extremely funny way. My favourite of his novels is probably still Timequake, his last novel and the first of his that I read.
He was known as an environmentalist, a compassionate humanist and a heavy smoker. In recent years he was an outspoken critic of the Bush administration and the Iraq war.

If you click on the self-portrait above it will lead you to a nice documentary on the man. Enjoy. (tip to AK-47 of TGDC)

And finally, another Vonnegut quote which I think is amusingly apt with regards to this blog and our credo:

People have to talk about something just to keep their voice boxes in working order so they’ll have good voice boxes in case there’s ever anything really meaningful to say.”

So it goes.
